Malta has achieved herd immunity against coronavirus.

The island state became the first country in the European Union to achieve such a result.

This was reported by news agencies with reference to a statement by Chris Fernet, the head of the Maltese Ministry of Health.

It is noted that 70 percent of Maltese adults have completed the first stage of vaccination against COVID-19.

42 percent of people received full protection from coronavirus. The total number of vaccinations exceeded 474 thousand out of a total population of 493 thousand.

Over the past 24 hours, only two new cases of COVID-19 infection have been detected in the country.

In Malta, many “Covid” restrictions have been lifted: citizens can now visit gyms, restaurants and other crowded places.

However, the mask regime is still in effect. From the beginning of summer, vaccinated citizens will not have to use personal protective equipment, but only on the street.

Over the entire period of the pandemic, 30.5 thousand people were infected in Malta. 417 Maltese have died from coronavirus infection.
