The Georgian parliament failed to impeach President Zurabishvili

The Georgian parliament was unable to impeach the country’s president, Salome Zurabishvili.

Less than a hundred deputies voted for the removal of Zurabishvili, so the impeachment did not take place.

The meeting was broadcast on the parliament website.

Why the Georgian Parliament failed to remove the President

86 parliamentarians voted for impeachment, one was against it, and a minimum of 100 votes out of 150 (two-thirds of parliament) is required.

The parliamentary opposition did not participate in the voting in order to exclude the possibility of collusion with the ruling Georgian Dream party, which initiated the impeachment.

As reported, on October 16, the Constitutional Court of Georgia ruled that Zurabishvili violated the Constitution by making working visits to European countries without government permission. The lawsuit was filed by Georgian Dream.

Thus, the Constitutional Court supported the idea of impeaching Zurabishvili for violating the fundamental law, after which it submitted the decision to parliament for consideration.

Since parliament failed to declare impeachment, the question of removing the president is removed and she will continue to hold her post.

The Georgian government denied the president foreign visits to 10 countries, including Israel, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates and Germany.

The presidential administration reported that Zurabishvili held meetings with European leaders to obtain support for granting Georgia candidate status to join the European Union.

The Georgian authorities expect that the European Union will make a corresponding decision in December.
