The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia, Maria Golubeva, resigns due to the events of May 9-10 at the monument to the Liberators of Riga.

The minister announced her decision on May 16 at a press conference.

Golubeva’s resignation after the events at the monument to the Liberators of Riga was demanded by the National Union party.

The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs then stated that she would not resign unless the head of the country’s government, Krisjanis Karins, demanded it.

As reported, today Golubeva said that Prime Minister Karins submitted to pressure and refused to support her stay as head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Golubeva has held this position since June last year.

After her resignation, she will return to parliament, where she was elected as a deputy before her appointment as minister.
