As reported this week, the US Department of Defense said it has sufficient weapons stockpiles and production capacity to provide military assistance to Ukraine and Israel at the same time.
However, the publication notes, the expert community is not so sure about this.
Any general statements such as “we will get through this, we can” are an oversimplification, – Michael O’Hanlon, director of the foreign policy research program at the Brookings Institution in Washington, said in a comment to the publication.
It is noted that the United States’ ability to replenish its own reserves is limited, and manufacturers are having difficulty fulfilling orders.
The publication recalls that the unexpected escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict forced the Pentagon to transfer to Israel tens of thousands of 155-mm artillery ammunition intended for Ukraine.
Matthew Kreunig, a research fellow at the Washington Atlantic Council, noted in a conversation with the publication that the United States has neither the forces, nor the shells, nor the military-industrial complex to simultaneously ensure its security interests in the Middle East, Europe and Asia.
He recalled earlier calls in the United States not to give too many weapons to Ukraine because of the need to focus on China.
In addition to this, we must now provide assistance to Israel. I think it will be a real challenge – said the expert.
As reported, last week the administration of US President Joseph Biden sent to Congress a request for additional budgetary allocations in the amount of $106 billion to assist Ukraine and Israel and counter China in the Asia-Pacific region.
