How the Hungarian Parliament approved the suspension of the CFE Treaty

177 parliamentarians voted for the bill, five were against.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary Véter Staraj, in his speech at the meeting, said that the CFE Treaty, which played an important role in maintaining the balance of the Armed Forces in Europe, has lost its significance due to Russia’s withdrawal from it.

Russia denounced the CFE Treaty in May last year. After this, the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance announced an indefinite suspension of participation in the treaty.

According to Hungarian media, more than a third of NATO countries have already adopted relevant laws.

The CFE Treaty, signed in 1990, came into force in 1992, and was adapted in 1997.

The document provides for limiting the number of five main categories of conventional weapons and equipment (artillery, tanks, armored combat vehicles, combat aircraft, attack helicopters), inspections and information exchange.

NATO countries did not ratify the adapted version of the CFE Treaty and continued to adhere to the 1990 provisions containing weapons standards taking into account the balance between the alliance and the Warsaw Pact.

Earlier it was reported that NATO ground forces headquarters in Finland are only 140 km from the border with the Russian Federation.
