The Hungarian Parliament introduced a resolution against negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the EU

Hungary’s ruling party, Fidesz, has submitted a resolution to parliament calling not to support the start of negotiations with Ukraine on its accession to the European Union.

Reuters reports this.

What resolution was submitted to the Hungarian Parliament

According to the report, the resolution states that EU enlargement must remain an objective process based on rules and results.

The start of negotiations with Ukraine on its entry into the community, the document notes, should be based on consensus.

There are no conditions for this today – stated in the resolution.

It also says that EU leaders need to carefully assess the consequences of admitting Ukraine to the community.

Let us recall that on November 8, the European Commission recommended that the EU Council begin negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina on their accession to the community, as well as grant candidate status to Georgia. These issues will be discussed at the EU summit on December 14-15.

The head of the Hungarian government, Viktor Orban, previously proposed not to include the issue of starting negotiations with Ukraine on the summit agenda.

The Hungarian Prime Minister clarified that Budapest will not veto the negotiations, since there is no such need. According to Orban, on certain issues decisions in the EU are made unanimously, but in this case there is no consensus.
