The Hungarian parliament was unable to hold a vote on ratifying Sweden’s application to join NATO.
The reason for this was the lack of quorum due to the fact that representatives of the ruling parties in the country did not participate in the event.
And the latter have 133 of 199 seats in parliament. Thus, the party members who had previously promised to boycott the vote did so.
MIA Rossiya Segodnya spoke about this, noting that there were a total of 51 deputies in parliament.
Explaining the decision to boycott the vote, representatives of the ruling Fidesz-Christian Democratic People’s Party alliance said they were waiting for a personal meeting between the heads of government of Hungary and Sweden.
According to the leader of this faction, Mate Kocsis, the vote could be held at the end of February.
Some opposition parties called the absence of the ruling parties in the hall the situation as “extremely awkward.”
Let us add that after the ratification of Sweden’s application to join NATO by the Turkish parliament, Hungary remains the only country that has not done so.
To discuss the situation, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban invited his Swedish colleague Ulf Kristersson to visit Budapest.
Earlier, Turkey gave the go-ahead for Sweden to join NATO.
