The president classified as “inexplicable” the fact that the United Nations Security Council does not, according to him, have the “authority” to get Israel to sit down at the table to talk.

“What I regret is the behavior of the Israeli government. Honestly, it is inexplicable that the UN Council does not have the moral and political authority to make Israel sit at a table to talk, instead of just knowing how to kill”, he said.

Lula was also asked about the operation being organized by Brazil to .

“We are going to do this (repatriate Brazilians) wherever necessary”, he added. The statements were made in Mexico City, this Tuesday (1), where he participated in the inauguration ceremony of the country’s new president, Cláudia Sheinbaum.

(22) in New York during the opening of the UN Future Summit, which precedes the General Assembly, Lula pointed out that currently “the majority of bodies lack the authority and means of implementation to enforce their decisions”.

“The General Assembly lost its vitality and the Economic and Social Council was emptied. The legitimacy of the Security Council shrinks every time it applies double standards or remains silent in the face of atrocities,” said the president.

Lula said that the “pandemic, conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, the arms race and climate change have revealed the limitations of multilateral bodies”.

He also pointed out, before having his microphone cut off for exceeding the time limit, that the Global South “is not represented in a way consistent with its current political weight”.

the reform of the Security Council is one of the oldest on its agenda. During his first two terms, the PT member already defended the restructuring of the body and sought for the country to occupy one of the permanent seats on the Council.

Since its creation, the body has been made up of ten countries that rotate in their chairs and five permanent ones. They are the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France.

The so-called P5 have veto power over the decisions of one of the few diplomatic bodies that can make mandatory decisions in the international community.
