The South Korean Parliament has finally passed a law that bans eating dogs.

Accordingly, there is a taboo on cutting and distributing dog meat in the country.

How the law was passed

From the details it is known that 208 deputies voted for the introduction of a ban on breeding dogs for slaughter, cutting, distribution and sale of meat from these animals.

The law was supported by both the ruling Civil Force party in the republic and the main opposition force, the United Democratic Party.

Lee Sang-kyung, a representative of the South Korean branch of the International Society for the Protection of Animal Rights, commented on the adoption of the law, saying:

We believe that this ban marks a significant turning point in South Korea’s approach to animal welfare.

What threatens violators?

If someone tries to break the new law, they will be punished. Up to imprisonment.

Thus, they can be imprisoned for two years or fined 20 million won ($15,527) for raising dogs for slaughter.

The penalty for citizens who cut up dogs is three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won ($23,291).

However, sentences for these violations will be carried out only from 2027.

Grace period

Until this date, the country has a three-year grace period.

During this period of time, farmers specializing in the production of dog meat, distributors and restaurants are invited to register their business with regional authorities.

To close such enterprises, subsidies will be allocated with support from government agencies.
