The President of Estonia refused to approve the law on the demolition of Soviet monuments

0views

Estonian President Alar Karis did not approve the amendments to three laws adopted by the country’s parliament.

We are talking about the law regarding the application of the Building Code, the planning law and the law on state property.

The proposed amendments make it easier to demolish Soviet monuments.

The office of the head of state explained the reluctance to approve them by the fact that they contradict the Constitution – MIA “Russia Today”.

Karis said that the adjustments involve the prohibition and removal from public space of objects that violate the public’s sense of justice or pose a threat to the country’s security.

He called the goals they pursued legitimate, but added: in the law they are designated by an expression that cannot be unambiguously interpreted.

And by “prohibited objects” we mean, first of all, those associated with the Soviet regime.

But the ban itself is formulated much more broadly, which is why the Estonian leader did not approve the amendments.

Karis stated that “Article 1(1) of the adopted law (on amendments – Ed.) is legally unclear and therefore contradicts Article 13(2) of the Constitution.”
