Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda called on Ukraine not to wait for its immediate entry into the North Atlantic Alliance.

The Lithuanian head of state made this statement on July 10 at a press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

What Nausėda said about Ukraine joining NATO

The President of Lithuania expressed hope that a compromise will be found at the NATO summit in Vilnius on the issue of admitting Ukraine to the alliance.

At the same time, Nausėda noted that the decision to accept Ukraine into NATO would not mean membership in the alliance.

There will still be a very long ratification process on the part of the capitals, – explained the head of the Lithuanian state.

He also expressed hope that at the Vilnius NATO summit decisions will be made that will make Ukraine’s membership in the alliance not a theoretical, but a practically achievable possibility.

Stoltenberg previously said that Ukraine is closer to NATO membership now than in 2008.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba announced today that NATO countries have agreed to accept Ukraine under a simplified procedure.
