Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicated the throne. She ruled the country for 52 years.

The abdication process took place during a meeting of the State Council with the participation of government members.

Also attending the event were Crown Prince Frederik and his son, Prince Christian (the future Christian XI).

At least 100,000 Danes gathered

The queen arrived at the palace in a carriage, accompanied by a squadron of the Guards Hussars.

Along the route, the royal lady was greeted by thousands of local residents, TASS agency.

According to the police, in total, from 100,000 to 150,000 people gathered to express their support and love for the queen at the palace and on Margrethe II’s route to it.

By signing the abdication document, the Queen automatically made her 55-year-old son, the Crown Prince, King of Denmark.

The Uncrowned King

Frederick X will not be crowned or anointed, as the corresponding traditions have not been observed in Denmark since 1660, when the throne became hereditary.

And with the introduction of the Constitution in the country – in 1849 – anointing was also abolished.

With the advent of the era of constitutional monarchy, almost all the old traditions disappeared, with the exception of one ritual: the new monarch must take an oath to parliament to uphold the Constitution.

Later, the oath was replaced by the signing of a statement of respect for the fundamental law.

It was precisely this procedure that Crown Prince Frederik performed at the age of 18 when he first received a seat in the State Council.

Why did the queen leave

The poll found that 92% of Danes consider Margrethe II’s half-century reign to be good or very good.

The Queen explained the decision to abdicate by the fact that after back surgery in February last year, she realized that it was time to “pass on the responsibility to the next generation.”

Earlier, the media wrote that Queen Margrethe II of Denmark would abdicate the throne.
