The rapporteur presents an opinion praising Galípolo, nominated for the presidency of the Central Bank

48views

The government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), presented, this Monday (7), a nominee to assume the presidency of the Central Bank (BC).

As leader of the government in the House, Jaques is aligned with the will of the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), responsible for the nomination. Galípolo’s approval is one of the Planalto Palace’s priorities.

The document now paves the way for the Galípolo hearing at the Senate Economic Affairs Committee, scheduled for this Tuesday (8), starting at 10 am. Voting is secret and in person.

In the opinion, Jaques Wagner discusses Galípolo’s CV and states that the economist is not a partner in any company, in addition to having presented certificates of tax regularity, for example.

“His CV, which is available to the eminent members of this commission, reveals his high level of professional qualification, his extensive experience in public positions and his solid academic training, with the necessary training in economic and financial matters”, he states Jaques at the end of the report.

“This commission is, therefore, in a position to deliberate on the nomination of Mr. Gabriel Muricca Galípolo to be promoted to the position of president of the Central Bank of Brazil”, he adds.

Once the nomination is approved by the committee, the intention of the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), is to promote the vote on Galípolo’s name in the House plenary this Tuesday afternoon, also secretly and in person. However, it will be necessary to check whether there will be a sufficient quorum for deliberation, especially as it is two days after the first round of municipal elections – in which parliamentarians were in the electoral bases dedicated to allies’ campaigns.

The internal assessment in the Senate is that Galípolo should have his name approved relatively easily, without surprises throughout the process. However, opposition parliamentarians say they will hold a tough hearing, with incisive questions related to interest rates and the independent conduct of the Central Bank, for example. The idea is that everyone plays “their role” in questioning, but not to the point of barring Galípolo’s approval.

Galípolo was appointed by President Lula to replace Roberto Campos Neto, whose term ends on December 31st of this year. Currently, Galípolo is director of Monetary Policy at the Central Bank. Previously, he was executive secretary of the Ministry of Finance, under Fernando Haddad’s administration.

This Monday, the day before the analysis, Galípolo met with Pacheco and Haddad, in Brasília. Earlier, he was also with President Lula himself at the Palácio da Alvorada, the official residence of the Presidency in the federal capital.
