The reason for France’s recall of its ambassador to Azerbaijan has been named

Tensions arose in relations between Paris and Baku. In this regard, Emmanuel Macron met with the French Ambassador to Azerbaijan.

The latter was recalled from the Transcaucasian republic “for consultations.”

France decided to summon its ambassador to Azerbaijan for consultations due to the continuation of actions in Baku in recent months that are detrimental to bilateral relations, – Statement by the French Foreign Ministry to MIA Rossiya Segodnya.

Macron and the Foreign Ministry

According to the report, during a meeting with the diplomat, Macron “expressed regret over Azerbaijan’s actions.”

The French leader also wished to hear information from Baku clarifying his intentions.

The Foreign Ministry noted: Paris stands for the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In this matter, France calls on the parties to adhere to existing norms of international law and the principle of the territorial integrity of both states.

This approach, French diplomats believe, will benefit Baku and Yerevan, as well as the benefit of the entire region.

Detention of a Frenchman

Let us remind you: in January, the Ambassador of Azerbaijan in Paris, Leyla Abdullayeva, informed about the detention by the authorities of her country of a French citizen accused of espionage.

The French Foreign Ministry rejected Baku’s accusations of interference in the internal affairs of Azerbaijan after official Paris demanded the release of a detained compatriot.

And a month earlier, Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elnur Mamedov called on France “not to provoke Armenia into a new war” in Transcaucasia.

Before this, in October, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, during a telephone conversation with the head of the Council of the European Union, Charles Michel, said: if new conflicts arise in the region, it will only be the fault of France.

Expulsion of diplomats

In September, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Aykhan Hajizade accused Paris of supporting separatism in Karabakh.

He also accused him of trying to “impose the neo-colonialist experience in Transcaucasia.”

Later, two employees of the French Embassy in Baku were declared persona non grata. There was a symmetrical response from Paris
