Antonov was recalled to Moscow “for consultations” in March. At that moment, relations between the Kremlin and Washington deteriorated significantly.
As already noted, the leaders of the two countries at a meeting on June 16 in Geneva agreed to return the ambassadors.
On the morning of Sunday, June 20, Anatoly Antonov flew to the United States: in the afternoon he arrived in New York, from where he headed to Washington.
In turn, the American Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan announced his imminent return to Moscow.
