The suggestive effect of earth curvature in two photographs. In one (bottom of the collage) we have an image of the Thorntonbank wind turbine system (off the Belgian coast) with the lower parts of the furthest towers increasingly hidden by the horizon. In the other we are instead on Lake Pontchartrain, in Louisiana, United States. Above we have a power transmission line that crosses the entire lake, perfectly straight, and all the towers are the same height, therefore making them ideal for observing the curvature of the .

Our Earth

Our planet is the third farthest from the Sun and the fifth largest in the solar system. It is the only world with liquid water on the surface as well as the only one where life (known to date) is present. The Earth is slightly larger than its neighbor and is the largest of the four planets (all made of rock and metal) in the inner solar system. The planets, except Earth, are named after Greek and Roman gods. However, Earth is a Germanic wordwhich simply means “the ground” (it is at least 1,000 years old). The vast oceans were a “cradle” for the development of life about 3.8 billion years ago. We also talked about the shape of the Earth in our book and how the ancients demonstrated its sphericity:
