Ukraine breaks diplomatic relations with Syria in response to Damascus’ recognition of the DPR and LPR.

Kyiv also decided to impose a trade embargo and other sanctions against Syria.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine informed about this on June 30.

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

In a statement, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that Kyiv strongly condemns Syria’s recognition of the DPR and LPR and breaks off diplomatic relations with Damascus in response to this unfriendly step.

Without severing consular relations, – is specified in the press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

They also announced the introduction of a trade embargo and other sanctions against individuals and legal entities against Syria.

The statement emphasizes that Syria’s decision is an encroachment on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, a gross violation of its legislation, the Charter of the United Nations and international law in general.

According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the Ukrainian embassy in Damascus has been closed since 2016, and the Syrian embassy in Kyiv has not been operating since 2018.

The interests of Ukrainian citizens in Syria are represented by the Ukrainian Embassy in Lebanon.

Let us recall that the day before the Syrian Foreign Ministry announced that they had decided to recognize the independence of the LPR and DPR and establish diplomatic relations with them.
