The United Nations (UN) commented on the situation on the Lithuanian border.

The Refugee Agency expressed concern about reports of violence against illegal migrants.

The international organization reminded Lithuania of the need to comply with international agreements related to people crossing the border.

This was reported by the Belarusian Telegraph Agency “”.

According to the 1951 Convention, the country into which the migrant has entered must not discriminate against refugees.

It is necessary to follow the rule, even if a person crossed the border illegally.

A refugee should not be immediately denied asylum by default. It is also considered a violation to turn migrants around without considering each case separately.

The UN does not deny that any state has the right to protect its borders. However, this should not violate human rights.

Situation on the Lithuanian border

In 2021, Lithuania is faced with a migration crisis. Law enforcement officers detained about 4 thousand illegal migrants.

At first, the authorities of the Baltic country placed all refugees in special centers.

However, later information began to appear that not all illegal immigrants were allowed entry.

Information about violence against people at the border also began to spread.

Yesterday, August 4, Belarus reported the death of one of the migrants. Belarusian border guards tried to save a beaten Iraqi who was walking from the border with Lithuania. However, this was not possible.
