The United States denied Ukraine the rights to borscht

54views

Some Americans believe that Ukraine cannot claim exclusive rights to borscht.

In particular, journalist Katya Sedgwick came to this conclusion in an article for The American Conservative.

Katya told readers that the name of the inventor of borscht has not been preserved in history – MIA Rossiya Segodnya.

To her, the dispute over this dish reminded her of the debate between Israelis and Arabs about whose delicacy is falafel.

The journalist found out that the age of borscht exceeds the chronicles in which it is mentioned.

She does not even rule out that the dish may be a predecessor of both Russian and Ukrainian ethnogenesis.

Katya writes: even if we assume that borscht really appeared on the territory of modern Ukraine, it is still not clear who in such a multinational region came up with the idea of adding a key component to it – beets.

It could well have been a Cossack, Tatar or Rusyn – and even a prodigal Frenchman who went to the East for adventure, the article states.
