The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine renamed the village of Novgorodskoye to New York

12views

People’s deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine renamed the urban settlement of Novgorodskoe to New York.

We are talking about a settlement located on the territory of the Bakhmut district of the Donetsk region. More than 300 deputies voted for the decision – a constitutional majority.

It turned out that the initiative to rename Novgorod came from what is called below, that is, from the residents of the village itself.

The population asked the people’s deputies to return the historical name to their settlement.

The New York colony was founded by Germans in 1892, who moved from the Khortytsia colonies.

Not far from here was the winter quarters of the Zaporozhye Cossacks of the Kalmius Palanka.

The settlers were Mennonites (supporters of Menno Simons, the founder of the Protestant denomination).

Part of the population were Lutherans, and soon the village was replenished with residents of other nationalities and religions.

New York became an urban settlement in 1938.

At the beginning of the Cold War, by decree of the Presidium of the Ukrainian SSR Armed Forces on October 19, 1951, New York was renamed Novgorod.
