Representatives of the authorities of the Canary Islands officially confirmed information about the end of the volcanic eruption on the island of Palma.

The eruption began on September 19 this year and ended on December 13. It took some time to ensure its completion.

The official statement from the authorities was published last Saturday, MIA reports.

It ended on December 13 in the afternoon, but only today can we say when the scientific committee confirmed the preservation of signs that give confidence – no lava, no pyroclasts, no significant gases, no significant earthquakes, no tremor, no significant deformations, the agency quotes as saying Advisor for Public Administration, Justice and Security of the Government of the Canary Islands Julio Perez.

85 days and 8 hours have passed since the awakening of the volcano. Since then, the island has changed beyond recognition.

More than 1,000 houses were completely destroyed during the eruption, roads, cemeteries and remains of buildings were covered with ash; in just 10 days, the lava flow reached the ocean, more than 7,000 people were evacuated.

More than 1.2 thousand hectares are covered with lava on the island, and roads are damaged.

The authorities are in no hurry to lift the state of emergency.

People whose houses have survived will be allowed to return to the island no earlier than the first half of January.
