The United Nations is sounding the alarm: the number of people living below the poverty line has increased significantly.

According to UN estimates, they increased by 165 million people.

True, it is clarified that such a number of earthlings will cross the poverty line by the end of this year.

What are the reasons

The reasons for this are the coronavirus pandemic, the rising cost of living and the conflict in Ukraine, – STV channel.

In connection with such a depressing state of affairs, the UN calls for a “pause” on debt repayments by developing countries.

The organization’s experts say: due to ongoing crises, 75 million earthlings will fall into extreme poverty – they will be able to spend less than $2.15 a day on their needs.

And another 90 million will cross the poverty line, which is considered to be $3.65 a day.

Such data are provided in a study conducted within the framework of the United Nations Development Program, covering the period from 2020 to the end of 2023.

“Alarming level”

Countries that have been able to invest in social protection systems in the past three years have prevented significant numbers of people from falling into poverty, said Achim Steiner, head of the programme.

He said highly indebted countries are characterized by high levels of debt, insufficient social benefits and “alarming increases in poverty levels.”

The report states that monthly spending to lift 165 million new poor people out of poverty will amount to $14 billion, which is 0.009% of global GDP.

And taking into account the loss of income of citizens who crossed the poverty line before the recent crises, the figure increases to $107 billion (0.065% of world GDP).
