The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, told CNN that the discussion surrounding the resumption, or not, of summer time in the country will be decided next Tuesday (15).

The statement took place this Friday (11), in an interview after the Esfera Forum, which takes place in Rome. According to the minister, the decision must be taken “with security and balance”, especially as it is a “transversal policy” and requires planning from some sectors.

“I was the most careful on this issue because it is not just an energy issue. It has a transversal impact on people’s lives”, he stated.

However, even if the decision is taken later this year, Silveira says he intends to implement the schedule only from 2025 onwards, unless there is an exceptional situation.

“I always say that we will only do it this year if it is really essential. If not, we will wait for the water period that starts in December and evaluate it for next year, since this year we are experiencing the worst water crisis in the last 74 years, according to indices measured by Cemaden, from the Ministry of Science and Technology ”, he added.

The aim is to save energy and optimize generation from solar and wind sources, which would reduce dependence on hydroelectric plants during peak hours.

“It is a public policy that is often necessary, it is not a public policy for Brazil, it is for the whole world, including in developed countries”, highlighted Silveira
