Tokayev signed amendments to the Constitution on a 7-year presidential term and renaming the capital

68views

On September 17, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a law amending the Constitution.

According to the amendments, the presidential term of office is limited to a 7-year period without the right of re-election, and the country’s capital is renamed from Nur-Sultan to Astana.

The President of Kazakhstan was informed about this.

What amendments have been made?

The amendments stipulate that the President of Kazakhstan will now be elected for 7 years instead of the previous five.

The same person is prohibited from being elected to the post of head of state more than once (previously there were no more than two consecutive terms).

This amendment will begin to apply to the winners of presidential elections held after the law comes into force.

The amendments also provide for the return of the former name of the capital.

The capital of Kazakhstan is the city of Astana, – stated in the document.
