There is a warning for a possible powerful geomagnetic storm that could cause the Northern Lights in Italy (even at low latitudes) tonight 10 October 2024

We have anchors in our eyes the beauty of the Northern Lights in Italy last May: there is now a warning for a possible powerful geomagnetic storm that could cause the phenomenon again in our (even at low latitudes) tonight 10 October 2024.

We asked the opinion of INAF’s solar astrophysicist. Here are his words:

There is a warning for a possible G4+ (Kp 8+) geomagnetic storm starting today due to the arrival of a CME (coronal mass ejection) with estimated speeds between 1200 and 1300 km/s. This is the second G4 forecast released by the NOAA SWPC since 2003, and for the first in May we know how it went. The CME occurred following an UT (18 Italian time). There is an uncertainty of around seven hours in the forecast of the CME’s arrival time, so the exact times are speculative but we await more news when the first signs of its arrival are seen when it will be around 1.5 million km from Earth and its magnetic speed and intensity will be measured by the DSCOVR and ACE satellites.
