Türkiye blocked the start of negotiations in NATO on Sweden and Finland joining the alliance.

The talks would mark the beginning of the process of admitting Sweden and Finland to the organization.

Reports this, citing sources in NATO.

According to the agency, today NATO planned to discuss applications from Sweden and Finland to join the alliance, which would have marked the beginning of the process of admitting these countries to the organization, but due to Turkey’s position, negotiations did not start.

Ankara has made it clear that it cannot approve the start of negotiations at this time.

Let us remind you that today the ambassadors of Sweden and Finland to NATO officially presented applications for joining the alliance to the organization’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Earlier it was reported that on May 16, at the CSTO summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of a response to the expansion of the alliance’s military infrastructure to Sweden and Finland.

At the same time, the head of the Russian state noted that the expansion of NATO to Sweden and Finland itself is not an immediate threat to Russia, since Moscow has no problems with these states.
