Türkiye demanded written guarantees from Sweden and Finland before joining the North Atlantic Alliance.

This was stated on May 24 by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

Turkish requirements

According to the Turkish publication Hürriyet, the head of Turkish diplomacy said that Finland and Sweden must stop supporting terrorists.

According to Cavusoglu, Türkiye wants written guarantees of this from Sweden and Finland.

We want a written agreement from them on specific steps, – said the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

He also said that Finland and Sweden offered to send delegations to Ankara and that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accepted the offer, saying that diplomacy is Ankara’s priority.

Another demand of Turkey to Sweden and Finland, according to the minister, is the lifting of sanctions on the supply of defense industry products to Turkey.

Çavuşoğlu added that negotiations between representatives of Ankara, Helsinki and Stockholm with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg may take place to discuss this issue.

This was suggested by Stoltenberg, – said the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, without specifying where and when the negotiations could take place.
