Türkiye still supported the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO

46views

During the NATO summit in Madrid, Türkiye officially supported the entry into the Alliance of Sweden and Finland.

The corresponding memorandum following negotiations on this topic was signed by the leaders of these three countries.

TASS talks about this, noting that the document represents a kind of road map for the admission of Helsinki and Stockholm to the military-political bloc.

It also records Ankara’s refusal of previously raised objections regarding the entry of Sweden and Finland.

In the presence of Erdogan

The memorandum was signed by the foreign ministers of Turkey, Sweden and Finland in the presence of the leaders of the three countries.

It is noted that the meeting was attended by the Presidents of Turkey and Finland Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Sauli Niinistö, Prime Minister of Sweden Magdalena Andersson and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

By the way, it was the latter who took the initiative to hold such a meeting.

We have reached an agreement between Sweden, Turkey and Finland, which means that Turkey now agrees that we receive invited status to NATO,” the Swedish prime minister said.

According to the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this country, Ann Linde, Stockholm may be granted the status of a guest state next week.

What Sweden and Finland promised

It is known that Sweden (this is also stated in the memorandum) agreed to fulfill Turkey’s conditions.

In particular, it pledged to tighten national legislation on terrorist crimes.

In addition, like Finland, it promised Ankara to investigate and suppress any financing and recruitment activities of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

NATO membership candidates also assured Turkey that they would consider requests for the extradition of citizens whom Ankara suspects of terrorism, taking into account the evidence and intelligence provided.
