Türkiye suspends participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe as of April 8.

This is provided for by a decree signed by the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The document was published by the official government gazette Resmi Gazete.

Suspension of Turkey’s participation in the CFE Treaty

Türkiye ratified the CFE Treaty, signed on November 19, 1990 in Paris, on July 1, 1992.

The CFE Treaty provides for limiting the number of 5 main categories of conventional weapons and equipment of the armed forces of 30 countries, inspections and exchange of information.

According to the decree of the head of the Turkish state, the implementation of the CFE Treaty between Turkey and other parties to the treaty is suspended from April 8.

As Yeni Şafak reminds in connection with Erdogan’s decree, Russia withdrew from the CFE Treaty in November last year.

After this, the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance suspended their obligations under the treaty. Türkiye then called on its NATO partners to return to the CFE Treaty.

It is noted that the current decision was made by Ankara due to growing international tensions.

Turkish media, citing sources in diplomatic circles, report that, according to Ankara, the CFE Treaty has lost its meaning in the current conditions, and obligations are in fact not being fulfilled.

At the same time, it is noted that the suspension of Turkey’s participation in the CFE Treaty may be reversible.

Earlier, Israel urgently stopped the work of its embassies around the world.
