Two European countries opposed granting Ukraine EU candidate status

44views

Two states that are members of the European Union opposed the idea of granting Ukraine candidate status for membership in the association.

It is noted that these countries are Denmark and the Netherlands. Relevant information appeared in foreign media.

Ukraine’s application to join the EU was signed by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky at the end of winter.

In mid-spring, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, visited the Ukrainian capital and handed over a questionnaire to the country’s president.

Filling out the document was necessary in order to begin negotiations regarding Ukraine’s possible membership in the EU.

At the moment, the European Commission is studying the answers that were left in the questionnaire by representatives of Kyiv.

It is possible that the first conclusions about the possibility of a new status for the Eastern European country will be announced during the EU summit, which will begin on June 23.

Position of Denmark and the Netherlands

However, information is already appearing in foreign sources about the disagreement of the Netherlands and Denmark with granting Ukraine candidacy in the European Union due to the fact that the country does not fully comply with the requirements for obtaining a new status.

It is noted that this was stated in a letter from diplomats from Denmark.

The document notes that Kyiv needs to “fundamentally improve the legislative and institutional framework,” – MIA reports with reference to American media.

In connection with the current situation, the issue of granting Ukraine an alternative status is being considered. In particular, it is reported that the German side has proposed to provide the Eastern European country with conditional candidacy.
