Statement by the UN Secretary General

Answering a question about the prospects for a truce, Guterres said that at the moment the possibility of concluding peace or a general truce in Ukraine is not visible.

When asked whether he was able to understand Russia’s goals as a result of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place in Moscow on April 26, the UN secretary general replied that he did not have a crystal ball to say what those goals were.

According to Guterres, at present it is necessary to focus on humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians from combat zones in Ukraine.

The UN Secretary General also spoke on the issue of food security, saying that Ukrainian and Russian agricultural products should return to world markets.
