Ursula von der Leyen, who is running for another term as head of the European Commission, presented her political program.

It contains an idea to transform the EU into a defense union.

The TASS agency, which has reviewed this document, reports this.

Our work over the next five years will be focused on building a true European defense union, – that’s what the program says.

According to von der Leyen, EU countries will “always remain responsible” for their troops, not only on the issue of defense doctrines, but also on their deployment.

However, the politician sees “a lot” that, in her opinion, Brussels can do “to strengthen the military-industrial base, innovation and the single market.”

In addition, von der Leyen wants to appoint a European Commissioner for Defense.

He promises to present a “White Paper on the future of European defense” within the first hundred days after taking office as head of the EC.

According to the politician, this document will spell out the principles of a new approach to defense issues in the European Union and list the areas of relevant investment.

And von der Leyen promised to create a European Defense Fund.

We will create a European Defense Fund, investing in advanced defense technologies in the sea, land, air, space and cyber domains, as follows from the text of her political program.
