US Supreme Court overturns constitutional right to abortion

45views

The US Supreme Court has overturned constitutional guarantees for abortion.

Now individual states will regulate this area independently.

The US Supreme Court informed about this on June 24.

What decision did the court make?

The court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that guaranteed federal abortion rights.

The cancellation of the mentioned decision was supported by 6 judges, three were against.

The decision means that federal laws no longer guarantee the right to abortion; the development of appropriate standards will be carried out at the level of individual states.

The Constitution does not provide the right to abortion. The right to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives, – said in the court decision.

Reaction to the court decision

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at the US Supreme Court building. Some call for preserving the right to abortion, others, on the contrary, support the court’s decision.

The first state to announce its intention to restrict abortion rights was Missouri.

State Attorney General Eric Schmitt said he would be the first attorney general to end abortion.

According to media reports, about 20 states in which Republicans are the strongest may limit the right to abortion.

A number of Democratic lawmakers criticized the court’s decision, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who accused Republicans of trying to ban abortion altogether.
