A volcano is raging again in Iceland – we are talking about the one called Sundhnukur, which is located near the city of Grindavik.

Due to the current extremely dangerous situation, the authorities on the evening of August 22 announced the evacuation of residents of the area adjacent to the “habitat” of the raging volcano.

This was reported by the RUV television and radio company with reference to the representative of the Grindavik fire service, Einar Sven Jonsson.

The eruption began in Grindavik. A state of emergency was declared shortly after 9 p.m. (00:00 Belarusian time. – Ed.), – message from MIA “Russia Today”.

According to Jonsson, the evacuation is almost completely completed, but added that the exact number of citizens to be displaced is not yet known.

In turn, Benedikt Ofeigsson, an employee of the Icelandic meteorological service, said that the fault in the ground from which magma flows is about 1.5 km.

Experts note that volcanic lava moves very quickly.

It was assumed that the eruption could reach its peak early in the morning on Friday, August 23.

Right now it doesn’t look like Grindavik is in danger, but we can’t say anything until the situation starts to stabilize,” Ofeigsson said.

Later, information appeared that the crack in the ground from which lava erupted had increased from 1.5 km to 3.9 km in 40 minutes.

Experts have calculated that the speed of the fire flow is six kilometers per hour.

There was also information that an earthquake occurred in the capital, Reykjavik, against the backdrop of a volcanic eruption.
