On September 18, Moldovans held a protest in the center of Chisinau demanding the resignation of the country’s President Maia Sandu.

Organizers estimate that about 45,000 people gathered for the rally in front of the presidential administration.

What demands are the protesters making?

The organizers of the protest were the communists and the opposition Shor party.

The reasons for dissatisfaction with the Sandu government were high tariffs, rising food prices and the persecution of political opponents by the ruling Action and Solidarity party.

Demonstrators are chanting “Down with power!”, “Down with Sanda!”, “We’ll exchange Sanda for firewood!”, “Resignation!”, “Early elections,” “Don’t destroy the country!”

Sor Party member Dinu Turcanu said the protests will not end until the government resigns. For this purpose, activists set up tents near the AP building.

Organizers estimate the number of protest participants at approximately 45,000 people. The honorary chairman of the Shor party, Valery Klimenco, noted that there could have been more protesters, but the police, trying to disrupt the rally, turned around many buses heading to Chisinau.

Klimenko also said that the goal of the protesters is the resignation of President Sandu, the government and parliament and early elections.
