WHO wants to rename monkeypox

43views

The World Health Organization has decided to rename the monkeypox virus.

The general director of the organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, notified the general public about this.

The WHO is working on the issue with “partners and experts from around the world,” he said.

Moreover, it is planned to rename both the virus itself and its branches, as well as the disease it causes.

We will announce new names soon, – Ghebreyesus MIA “Russia Today”.

By the way, WHO has already registered over 1,600 officially confirmed cases of monkeypox and about 1,500 more suspected cases in 39 countries.

As for the renaming, as it became known, the other day more than 30 scientists from different countries approached the medical community with a request for this.

They based their call on the WHO recommendation to avoid using geographical regions and animals in disease names.

Therefore, scientists are against calling the virus African.

The authors of the message are convinced that renaming will help avoid discrimination and stigmatization.
