The governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, , defended a unified approach in combating the fires that are ravaging Brazil. In an interview with CNN BrazilRiedel emphasized the importance of focusing on effective operational actions, avoiding the politicization of the issue.
“I understand that we should not politicize this entire discussion, despite us being in the middle of a municipal electoral process”, stated the governor, adding that the result will only be achieved with concrete actions.
Increase in arson
Riedel highlighted a worrying aspect of the current crisis: the significant increase in arson. “I had never seen the volume of arson fires in the way they occurred,” he said, mentioning occurrences in São Paulo, the Cerrado and the north of the country.
The governor suggested that the motivations behind these criminal acts are diverse, and may include varied economic interests and political positions. He emphasized the need to rigorously investigate and punish those responsible for these actions.
Integration of forces and focus on results
Riedel praised the federal government’s approach, citing the recent visit of President Lula and several ministers to the state. According to him, the focus has been on the integration of forces and the search for concrete results.
“I think we must reduce the politicization of the issue and act objectively in operational actions, whether prevention, punishment for crimes that are being committed or combat”, concluded the governor, highlighting the importance of a coordinated response and effective response to the fire crisis in the country.
