For information

Rushdie, 75, has won numerous literary awards, including the Man Booker Prize.

Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain awarded Rushdie a knighthood in 2007. This caused a wave of discontent in the Islamic world.

Back in 1989, the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa against Rushdie because of his book The Satanic Verses, which aroused the ire of Muslims who considered the novel an insult to the Prophet Muhammad.

For several years, the writer was constantly guarded by Scotland Yard agents. In 2002, the British government received tacit guarantees from Tehran for Rushdie’s safety, and the security was removed.

Since 2000, the writer has lived in the United States and received citizenship there in 2016.
