Your Heat Pump Could Be Dangerous: Thousands of Units Recalled Over Overheating Risks

Thousands of popular heat pumps are being recalled nationwide by Health Canada over a possible fire hazard. Amana, Daikin, and Goodman-branded pumps are recalled by the federal agency last month because power loss could cause them to overheat when the electricity is restored — regardless of whether they’re still set for cooling mode on thermostats. A total of nine models for both Amana and Daikin-labeled heat pumps; four Goodman-branded pumps.

“The affected products were sold from May 2022 to April 2024 both in Canada (approximately 5,549 units) and the United States (approximately 56,028),” read a recall notice. So far, there have not been any injury reports or reported incidents of companies overheating. Affected products have corrective updates, and the health agency is recommending that any unit without one should be powered down unless immediate cooling is required. Daikin Comfort Technologies is updating the software remotely on all affected Wi-Fi-connected units, but those with heat pumps not connected to WiFi should visit the company’s website.
