Do you have aphids on your plants? Don’t wait until the problem gets worse! Head to the kitchen where you’ll find everything you need for effective spraying. Aphids are one of the biggest enemies of gardeners. These inconspicuous pests are hard to notice at first, but once they become visible, they quickly start destroying leaves, twigs and buds.

Fortunately, we don’t have to resort to strong chemicals to combat them. Just a cheap kitchen mix that everyone has at home. These products are very effective in fighting aphids in the garden.

Where do aphids come from in the garden?

Plant aphids are often brought in from the new plant trade. Their larvae are almost invisible and easy to miss. Another source of aphids is a neighbor’s garden, where they can easily fly to us.

Preventing aphids

The aphid situation can be prevented by planting repellent plants such as mint or lavender. These plants do not tolerate aphids and will protect your crops.

What to do if aphids appear?

The trio from your kitchen will come to your rescue: Baking soda, oil and water.

How to make a natural aphid spray:

  • Mix:
    • 500 ml warm water
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon oil
  • Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and apply to each leaf and stem.

This homemade spray is also effective against moths and silkworms. For optimum effect, use it regularly, ideally every 4 days.

Other natural sprays against aphids:

  • Onions and garlic: You can make a simple brine with these vegetables. Chop the vegetables, cover with water and bring to the boil. Then lower the heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes. Pour the cooled mixture into a spray bottle and apply to the plants.

With these simple tips and inexpensive kitchen equipment, you can get rid of aphids in your garden easily and effectively.
