A tried and tested method of control is a mixture of washing-up liquid, vinegar and water. This attracts the flies, which then drown in the liquid. But not everyone always has all the ingredients to hand.

For an alternative, all you need is a glass, a piece of paper and a piece of overripe fruit.
- Place the piece of fruit in the empty jar and roll the paper into a funnel.
- Then place the funnel on top of the jar.
- The insects will fly in and can no longer escape. You can then release the flies outside.
Preventing fruit flies: what’s important
The animal welfare organization PETA recommends removing organic waste regularly and washing cold-resistant food thoroughly as a preventative measure. The NDR advises cleaning surfaces and drains thoroughly and washing used dishes immediately.
